Department of Telecommunications

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is the apex body under the Ministry of Communications, Government of India, tasked with framing, executing and regulating telecom policy across the country. From its office at Sanchar Bhawan, Ashoka Road, New Delhi, it administers all matters concerning communication mediums — telegraphs, telephones, wireless, data and telematic services.

Its core functions cover the grant of licences for telecom services such as Unified Access Service, Internet and VSAT; frequency management for radio communication in coordination with international bodies; and enforcement of wireless regulations through monitoring of transmissions nationwide. The department is central to the development of India's digital infrastructure and the rollout of 5G.

DoT additionally supervises public sector telecom undertakings and runs initiatives aimed at extending broadband and connectivity to rural and underserved regions.
