Department of Telecommunications

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) functions under the Ministry of Communications, Government of India, and is the principal authority for framing, executing, and overseeing telecom policy in the country. Based at Sanchar Bhawan, Ashoka Road, New Delhi, the department handles all matters pertaining to communication channels, including telegraphs, telephones, wireless, data, and telematic services.

Among its primary duties are the issuance of licences for telecom services (Unified Access Service, Internet, VSAT), the management of radio frequencies in consultation with international organisations, and the enforcement of wireless regulations through nationwide transmission monitoring. The department is also instrumental in advancing India's digital infrastructure and the deployment of 5G networks.

In addition, DoT supervises public sector telecom undertakings and leads efforts to extend broadband and connectivity to rural and underserved regions.
