The central ministry runs NTTM and the GREAT scheme, granting up to INR 50 lakh to startups innovating in technical textiles for commercialisation.
The Ministry of Textiles is the central government body that frames policy and drives promotion for India's textiles and apparel sector. Its National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM), set up in 2020 with an outlay of INR 1,480 crore, works towards establishing India as a global leader in technical textiles.
Under NTTM, the GREAT (Grant for Research and Entrepreneurship across Aspiring Innovators in Technical Textiles) scheme extends grants of up to INR 50 lakh per startup to help convert prototypes into commercial technologies and products. Twenty-four startups have been approved under GREAT so far. The mission also carries components covering promotion and market development, export promotion, and skill development aimed at 50,000 individuals. Technical textiles find use in automobiles, civil engineering, agriculture, healthcare, and personal protection.
Startups, young innovators, and scientists working on technical textiles products for medical, industrial, protective, agricultural, and construction applications — and who require grant funding to commercialise functional prototypes — are the intended beneficiaries.
