About Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India

The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying operates under the Government of India's Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. It was constituted through a Cabinet Secretariat notification dated 17 June 2019. Its origins lie in 1 February 1991, when the animal husbandry and dairy development divisions were carved out of the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation to form a separate department; in 1997, the fisheries division and a portion of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries were brought within its remit. The department is headquartered at Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi.

Its functions are carried out through divisions handling administration, trade, international cooperation, budget and finance, animal quarantine and certification services, and Kisan Credit Cards for livestock farmers.

The department administers livestock and dairy development schemes, among them the Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund and the National Livestock Mission. It also runs breed multiplication and breeder farm programmes for poultry, pigs, sheep and goats, maintains the Bharat Pashudhan animal database, and confers the National Gopal Ratna Award.
