The central ministry funds micro and small enterprises across India through PMEGP, ASPIRE and other schemes offering subsidised loans, margin money and incubation support.
The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) is the central government ministry that frames policies and programmes for India's MSME sector. It runs a number of schemes directed at encouraging entrepreneurship, creating livelihoods, and developing enterprises throughout the country.
One such scheme is the Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP), a credit-linked subsidy programme delivered through the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC). Under it, banks provide margin money for manufacturing units (up to INR 25 lakh) and service units (up to INR 10 lakh). From its launch in 2008 until now, more than 9.69 lakh micro enterprises have received assistance, with subsidy exceeding INR 25,500 crore, and employment has been generated for an estimated 79 lakh persons. A second scheme, ASPIRE (A Scheme for Promotion of Innovation, Rural Industry, and Entrepreneurship), works to advance innovation and rural enterprise; it has trained over 1.16 lakh beneficiaries, of whom 18,444 have taken up self-employment and 1,141 micro-enterprises have been set up.
